Nebraska Emergency Workers Plead for More Workers’ Comp Coverage

During a recent legislative hearing in Nebraska, emergency workers from across the state recalled traumatizing accident scenes when asking for a new level of workers’ compensation coverage.

The emergency personnel were testifying in support of a bill filed in January, LB780, that that would extend workers’ compensation coverage for first responders who get “mental injuries” or mental illnesses from extraordinary work conditions.

The bill from Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha makes it clear that the mental injuries could not arise from such things as demotions, disciplinary actions or job transfers.

The emergency workers said they had difficulty recovering from seeing the aftermath of the fatal accidents.

One of the men testifying said a co-worker responded to an accident where his wife had died.

Gov. Dave Heineman vetoed a similar bill two years ago.

The city of Omaha, the Nebraska League of Municipalities and business groups oppose the bill.
