Bill Would Extend Nebraska Workers’ Comp Benefits for First Responders

Physical, on-the-job injuries someday might not be the only types of injuries that could qualify Nebraska first responders for workers’ compensation.

On Jan 7, a state lawmaker introduced a bill (LB780) that would allow first responders to emergencies who get “mental injuries” or mental illnesses from extraordinary work conditions to get workers’ compensation.

The bill from Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha makes it clear that the mental injuries could not arise from such things as demotions, disciplinary actions or job transfers.

First responders are defined in the bill as firefighters, police officers, crime-scene investigators and out-of-hospital, emergency-care providers such as ambulance crew members.
