California’s Largest Wildfire of 2025 Threatens 870 Structures

A wildfire in California that has become the biggest fire in the state this year, prompting evacuation orders and threatening hundreds of structures, has grown to 83,933 acres.

The fire, which started on Aug. 2 and covers San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, is threatening more than 870 structures, according to officials. It is 9% contained.

Hot and dry conditions have made battling the fire difficult, and the weather through the rest of the week and into the weekend could make fighting the blaze even more difficult.

“Thursday could see temperatures into the triple digits, with an increase in fire behavior,” an update from firefighting officials states. “The warming and drying trend is expected to continue through the weekend.”

Evacuation orders are in effect in both counties.

Nearly 2,000 personnel are assigned to the fire, as well as 137 engines, and 25 water tenders.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
