Idaho Woman Sentenced for Concealing Insurance Fraud Conviction on Application

An Idaho woman was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison and fined for applying for insurance coverage while concealing a prior felony conviction for insurance fraud.

Elisa Hernandez was convicted of one felony count of insurance fraud following an investigation by the Idaho Department of Insurance’s fraud unit.

The department’s investigation reportedly found that Hernandez applied for insurance coverage on two occasions—on July 11, 2019, and January 21, 2021—while concealing a prior felony conviction for insurance fraud. Her criminal history made her ineligible for coverage, but the policies were approved.

Between 2019 and 2021, Hernandez filed 47 claims under the policies and collected $7,260 in benefits to which she was not legally entitled, according to the department.

A Canyon County District Judge sentenced Hernandez to a total of seven-and-a-half years in prison—one-and-half years fixed and six years indeterminate. She was also ordered to pay $7,260 in restitution to the insurer.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Marsha Larson.
