Arizona City Struggling to Emerge from Cyberattack

Kingman officials say municipal employees aided by Arizona National Guard technology personnel this week continued working to unravel a cyberattack that targeted the northwestern Arizona city’s computer system days earlier.

The attack last Friday knocked down the system, with results that included no access to email and loss of customers’ ability to pay utility bills online, city officials said in a statement.

Well into the following week, the extent of the attack remained underdetermined, the statement said. “As systems are brought back online, it will be done incrementally, therefore we are still asking for the community’s patience as we work to get back to fully functioning levels; it will not happen overnight.”

City spokeswoman Coleen Haines said backup servers and network drives have to be reviewed to make sure they were not infected by the attack.

Haines said the city is waiving late fees for utility bills.
