Flood Insurance Program Warns Flagstaff About Post-Fire Flooding

The Federal Emergency Management Agency’s National Flood Insurance Program is telling people in the Flagstaff area affected by a recent fire that they should protect their homes and families from flash flooding caused by summer rains.

The agency says that this spring’s Tinder Fire resulted in loss of vegetation and charred ground that has increased the risk of flash flooding and mudflows. It says floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States.

FEMA’s national flood insurance program recommends that residents have an evacuation plan, keep a bag of disaster supplies packed ready to go, prepare their homes by moving valuables to higher levels and removing gutter debris and that they buy insurance.
