LAPD Chief Beck Rescinds Car Impound Policy

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck has rescinded the department’s controversial car impound policy that made it easier for unlicensed drivers to keep their cars.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Beck issued an internal directive Friday telling officers not to adhere to Special Order 7 until further notice.

A Superior Court judge ruled in August that the policy violates California’s vehicle code. The policy allows unlicensed drivers stopped by police to produce registration, valid ID and proof of insurance to avoid having their cars impounded.

Immigrant rights groups are expected to continue their appeal. They say the LAPD’s old rules were unfair to immigrants who couldn’t obtain driver’s licenses.

The police union said allowing people to drive without a license was reckless and not the right solution.
