Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Strikes Northern California

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck offshore Northern California at 12:20 p.m. PST, about 35 miles from Petolia and 50 miles from Eureka, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. This is the second earthquake in the area in less than a month.

Damage from the 6.5-magnitude temblor that affected Humboldt County in mid-January was estimated to top $28 million, according to the most recent reports.

There were no immediate damage reports. Insurance Journal will provide updates as they become available.
