Robert Coates Jr. of Ingham, Coates and Payne Dies

Robert E. Coates Jr., an insurance broker in Pasadena, Calif., for more than 50 years and resident of La Canada Flintridge died Saturday, Nov. 4.

A former blimp pilot for the Navy, he joined Jimmy Ingham and Gleeson “Tige” Payne in Pasadena following the war, and formed the brokerage Ingham, Coates and Payne, a successful firm for more than 50 years .

Coates was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, past president of Pasadena Rotary, an active member of Pasadena Tournament of Roses and formerly on the boards of the Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce, Cal Tech Y, Pacific Oaks School, Pasadena Red Cross and various other organizations.

He is survived by his wife Doris Young Coates, his five children and their families, and six step children and their families.

A memorial service and celebration of his life was held Sunday, Nov. 12 at the La Canada Presbyterian Church, in La Canada, Calif. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his name to The La Canada Presbyterian Church Music Ministry or the Pasadena Rotary Foundation for Excellence in Teaching Program or to the charity of your choice.
