Alabama DOI Gives Deputy Commissioners New Responsibilities in Efficiency Move
Two deputy commissioners at the Alabama Department of Insurance will take on new roles in an effort to improve efficiency and outreach at the agency, Commissioner Mark Fowler announced Tuesday.
Larry Chapman, with the DOI for two years, will add the role of chief of staff to his responsibilities and will oversee administration, external affairs and human resources. External affairs will include media relations and will manage a push to better educate Alabama consumers about insurance matters, the DOI said in a statement.
Chapman was previously an agent with Alfa Insurance, one of the largest and politically influential property insurers in the state.
Richard Fiore, who joined the department in 2024, will manage innovation, operations, accounting and information technology. That will include the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning at the DOI, Fowler noted.
Commissioner Fowler took over the department in 2022 after longtime Commissioner Jim Ridling retired.
