Tropical System Moving in Carolinas Monday With Winds, Rain, Floods

September 16, 2024

A potential tropical storm loomed off the coasts of the Carolinas Monday morning, with deteriorating conditions expected for the Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington areas.

The National Weather Service and local news reports noted that the disturbance had already brought heavy rains to the area, and minor flooding is expected. Up to five more inches of rain are expected from the storm.

Multiple schools were closed Monday as sustained winds reached 50 mph, the StarNews reported.

The system was moving northwest Monday morning and could pick up speed. A tropical storm warning was issued by the National Hurricane Center for coastal areas from Charleston, South Carolina, to Hatteras, North Carolina, the Weather Channel reported.

The storm is predicted to move inland toward Charlotte, weakening by Wednesday morning.
