Tropical Depression Fred Expected to Bring Heavy Rainfall to Southern Florida
Tropical Depression Fred could lead to heavy rainfall across southern Florida according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm was moving across portions of Hispaniola the morning of Aug. 12. Fred is expected to be near the Florida Keys and southern Florida by Aug. 14.
The NHC said heavy rainfall could lead to areal, urban and small stream flooding along with possible rapid river rises across southern Florida beginning Aug. 13. Heavy rainfall is expected in Florida and parts of the Southeast this week and into next week.
The Keys and the southern Florida Peninsula could see three to five inches of rain with isolated maximum totals of 8 inches.
Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h). A tropical storm watch will likely go into effect for portions of the Keys and southern Florida by the afternoon of Aug. 12.
Fred is the sixth named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.
