Florida Man Gets 8 Years for Hurricane Irma Fraud

December 21, 2018

A Florida man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for taking advantage of people who suffered property damage last year during Hurricane Irma.

Collier County prosecutors says 44-year-old Daniel Lawrence Ohleyer was sentenced Monday. He had been convicted of two counts of contracting without a license during a state of emergency, one count of grand theft and two counts of violation of probation.

Authorities say Ohleyer contracted with two different victims to rebuild and rescreen pool cages. The victims both made multiple payments, but Ohleyer didn’t have a contractor’s license for aluminum work. Prosecutors say Ohleyer also took parts of a motorcycle he agreed to purchase but did not buy it and failed to return the parts.

Hurricane Irma hit Florida in September 2017.
