North Carolina Man Accused of Faking $104K in Insurance Claims
A North Carolina man has been charged with four counts each of insurance fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, according to a statement from North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey.
Jeffrey Neal Smith, 42, of, Concord, N.C. Smith was investigated after N.C. Department if Insurance criminal investigators received a complaint concerning several claims he filed. Smith is accused of illegally obtaining $104,497 by submitting fraudulent claims and using fictitious documents to inflate the settlement.
Smith was arrested in Cabarrus County on Nov. 30. An $8,000 secured bond was set.
“According to the FBI, insurance fraud costs the average family between $400 and $700 per year in the form of increased premiums,” said Causey.
The Department of Insurance employs 20 sworn state law enforcement officers dedicated to investigating and prosecuting claims of insurance and bail bonding fraud.
