North Carolina Sheriff Changes Policy on Police Chases After 5 Killed
A North Carolina sheriff has changed his department’s policy on chases after five people were killed when a driver fleeing officers slammed into another car.
The News & Record of Greensboro reports Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes said that while he had a good policy that followed state laws and procedures, it could be strengthened.
Police said the driver was fleeing police in a stolen car at nearly 130 mph (209 kph) on Sept. 30 when the crash occurred. Authorities said 42-year-old Deshon Lee Manuel, 34-year-old Theresa Monique Kingcade and 30-year-old Bruce Wayne Hunt were in one car. Also killed were 32-year-old Stephanie Louise Warshauer and her passenger, 29-year-old Alyssa Mackenzie Bolick.
Drew Brown, the attorney for the families of two of the victims, said his clients are very pleased.
