North Carolina Government Building Damaged by Flood

Workers at the North Carolina Department of Insurance and other state agencies are cleaning up after water flooded a state building in downtown Raleigh damaging offices and state records.

Officials said Tuesday it’s not known what caused an 8-inch water line connected to a sprinkler system to burst Saturday night on the first floor of the Dobbs Building on Halifax Mall.

Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin says standing water reached 2 feet deep in some areas.

Administration Department spokesman Chris Mears says the flooding also affected offices of the Industrial Commission, the Utilities Commission and the Department of Cultural Resources.

The building’s fire alarm alerted state officials to the flood and a restoration team was on the scene Sunday.
