Mississippi County Weighs Building Code

Adams County residents with strong opinions about building codes are going to have to wait a little longer to put those opinions on the record.

The Natchez Democrat reported that the Adams County Board of Supervisors had originally scheduled a public hearing for Monday to discuss the potential adoption of building codes for the county outside of the Natchez city limits.

Board President Darryl Grennell said the hearing had to be postponed until July 7, because county officials forgot to run a legal advertisement officially notifying the public of the hearing.

The Legislature passed a law this year requiring counties to adopt building codes or officially opt out by August.

Because the proposed codes would impose new regulations and fees on residents, board members said they wanted to hear from the public before making any decisions.

“I would love people to come to the hearing,” Supervisor Mike Lazarus said. “I have got to make a decision, and I have got to know what to base it on. I need some direction or I am going to say ‘no’ to it.”
