Flood Warnings for Tennessee, Kentucky Near Mississippi River

Flood warnings have been issued in Tennessee and Kentucky as the Mississippi River starts to slowly rise from northern floodwaters, but officials say the rising water should not have a significant impact.

Marlene Mickelson, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Memphis, said Monday that the lower part of the Mississippi River will see elevated levels through the next two weeks.

Jim Pogue, of the Army Corps of Engineers district in Memphis, said the corps is not anticipating any significant flooding in its region, which includes parts of western Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, southern Missouri and southern Illinois.

Pogue said the river gets much wider as it moves south toward Memphis making flooding less likely. Pogue also said the land near the river is mostly agricultural.
