Authorities Set Trial Date in Alabama Katrina Fraud Case

An Alabama woman is set for trial on a charges she conspired to defraud the federal government by preying on Hurricane Katrina victims who needed their properties rebuilt.

The government seeks a judgment of $62,500 against Joyce E. Jordan, who was doing business with others as Jordan Construction in Pearl River County between September 2005 and April 2006.

The Sun Herald reports trial is set for Nov. 1 in Gulfport.

Jordan is charged with conspiracy and three counts of wire fraud.

Prosecutors say the family business was in Gadsden, Ala., and moved to Slidell, La., before it set up shop in Picayune.

An indictment alleges the company signed contracts and accepted payments but did not do the work it was hired to do or didn’t do the work properly.
