South Carolina Attorney Declines Consideration for Workers’ Comp Board

Columbia, S.C. attorney, Samuel Painter, withdrew his name from consideration for a term on the state’s Workers’ Compensation Commission.

Painter faced repeated questions earlier this week about his involvement with Gov. Mark Sanford’s efforts to have awards for injured workers determined by new guidelines.

Painter withdrew from consideration on April 10 as the Senate Judiciary Committee planned to question him again.

An executive order from Sanford last summer caused problems after some saw it as requiring commissioners to decide payments in workers’ comp cases using standards the Legislature had rejected.

That issue is now before the state Supreme Court.
