Tennessee: Bridge near Memphis Airport Undergoes Emergency Repairs
A bridge in Tennessee that is part of the main route to the Memphis International Airport is undergoing emergency repairs.
State inspectors found that strong currents on Nonconnah Creek is washing away bed material around a pier’s base on the Airways bridge.
However, city engineer Wain Gaskins says the bridge was never in any imminent danger of collapse.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation notified the city in December and a contractor will drive steel pilings and create a “cradle” to protect and reinforce the pier.
The repair work could cause delays getting to and from the airport.
