Natl. Hurricane Center Director Advises ‘Plan Ahead’

Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Center’s visited Jacksonville May 6 as part of the center’s annual hurricane awareness tour.

Students got a chance to hear from hurricane experts and check out a special plane that flies into the eye of the storm. The whole idea of the event is to get people thinking about the hurricane season that starts June 1.

Mayfield used the opportunity to encourage people to plan ahead. When asked about what this hurricane season holds, Mayfield said, “If you look out there today, the ocean temperature will be above normal. That’s probably not a good sign. We need to be prepared.”

This week, the National Hurricane Center will go on record on what kind of season it expects. Already some experts are predicting a very active storm season for Florida.
