ExxonMobil Wins Approval for Texas Carbon Capture in 2-to-1 Vote

ExxonMobil Holdings Corp. won approval for its Rose carbon-capture project in Texas, allowing the company to move ahead with the emission-reducing development that could be among the biggest of its kind.

The Railroad Commission of Texas, the state’s primary oil and natural gas regulator, approved a permit to inject carbon dioxide underground with two commissioners voting in support and one against, according to a statement release by dissenting member Wayne Christian.

The permit allows ExxonMobil to inject as much as 53 million tons of carbon dioxide over a 13-year period from industrial emitters along the Gulf Coast into rock strata about one mile (1.6 kilometers) underground for permanent storage.

ExxonMobil didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
