Abbott Names Crawford Texas Insurance Commissioner

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott named Amanda Crawford Commissioner of Insurance to replace Cassie Brown.

Brown retired after more than four years overseeing the Texas Department of Insurance.

Crawford was appointed for a term set to expire on Feb. 1, 2027.

Crawford is the executive director of the Department of Information Resources and is Texas’ chief information officer. She was previously deputy attorney general for administration and general counsel at the Office of the Attorney General of Texas. Crawford is a member of the State Bar of Texas and a past president of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers.

Albert Betts, executive director of the Insurance Council of Texas, congratulated Crawford on her appointment.

“We look forward to working with her and the Texas Department of Insurance to support a strong, competitive insurance market,” Betts stated. “We also extend our sincere thanks to Commissioner Brown for her years of dedicated public service and leadership.”

The Texas insurance commissioner is appointed by the governor to oversee the regulation of the $293 billion Texas insurance market, the second largest in the nation.
