Oklahoma Seeks Contractors, Evaluators for Fortified Homes Program
The Oklahoma Insurance Department is seeking applications from contractors and evaluators to participate in the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes program (SOH).
SOH provides Oklahoma residents with grants of up to $10,000 to mitigate their home against wind and hail by adopting the IBHS Fortified standard. The OID expects opening grant applications in early 2025.
Contractors and evaluators who would like to be on the OID’s approved list for the SOH can find information at https://www.oid.ok.gov/okready/.
Contractors and evaluators must be certified through the Institute of Business and Home Safety’s Fortified Program. Additionally, they must provide a state tax commission compliance letter, proof of in-force general liability with a minimum of $500,000 in coverage and proof of workers’ compensation and employer’s liability insurance.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed the Strengthen Oklahoma Homes Act into law in May. The act is modeled off programs in Alabama and Arkansas.
Homeowners will receive funds to retrofit their homes with impact-resistant shingles and other enhancements, the OID said. Insurance companies may offer reduced premiums for homes with such modifications.
Homeowners are responsible for any cost of the roof replacement that exceeds the awarded grant amount.
