Tulsa County Democratic Party Chair to Run for Insurance Commissioner

April 24, 2018

The chair of the Tulsa County Democratic Party has entered the race to become Oklahoma’s next insurance commissioner.

Kimberly Fobbs currently is the only Democrat who has filed to run for the insurance commissioner’s post, according to the Oklahoma Secretary of State’s office. Two Republicans have filed to vie for the office: Glen Mulready, a Tulsa-area state representative who sits on the House Insurance Committee and works in the insurance industry; and Donald Chasteen, a Shelter Insurance agent from Inola.

Current Insurance Commissioner John Doak is prevented by term limits from running again.

While Fobbs is active Tulsa County politics, this is the first time she has run for a statewide office. Fobbs said in her announcement that her experience in public service and her work in the insurance industry would serve her well in the commissioner’s job.

Fobbs has served in management and leadership roles at the insurance and financial services company, MetLife. In addition to her role as chair of the Tulsa County Democratic Party, Fobbs has served on the Oklahoma Judicial Nominating Commission and is an advisor to SmartGrowth Tulsa. She also teaches women’s empowerment and business seminars, and also advocates for judicial independence for Oklahoma Courts.
