Oklahoma, Texas Insurance Commissioners Elected to NAIC Leadership Posts
Texas Commissioner of Insurance David Mattax has been elected secretary-treasurer of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), and Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak was elected vice chair of the group’s Midwest Zone.
The NAIC establishes standards and conducts peer reviews for insurance regulatory agencies across the nation.
Mattax has held several leadership positions with the NAIC since he was appointed commissioner by Governor Greg Abbott in 2015. He also serves on the executive committee for the International Association of Insurance Supervisors.
Before being appointed commissioner, Mattax spent 23 years at the Texas Attorney General’s Office and represented the Texas Department of Insurance in legal issues including receiverships, ERISA cases, rule-making and enforcement actions. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and is admitted to practice before the four Texas Federal District courts, Fourth and Fifth Circuit U.S. Courts of Appeal, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
Doak will also represent the Midwest Zone on the NAIC’s Government Relations Leadership Council.
In addition to his role as Vice Chair of the Midwest Zone, Doak was selected to represent the Midwest Zone on the management committee of the Interstate Insurance Product Regulation Commission (IIPRC).
Doak currently serves as chair of the American Indian and Alaska Native Liaison Committee and vice chair of the Anti-Fraud (D) Task Force. He is also a member of the International Insurance Relations (G) Committee and holds leadership positions on several Property and Casualty Insurance (C) Committee sub-groups.
To help organize the NAIC’s efforts, the United States has been divided into four geographic zones: Northeast, Southeast, Midwest and West. Each zone has its own chair, vice chair and secretary who sit on the Executive (EX) Committee.
Doak’s and Mattax’s new roles with the NAIC begin in January.
