New Texting-While-Driving Ban Proponents: Oklahoma Teens

A group of teenagers who support a ban on texting while driving in Oklahoma are urging legislators to pass a new state law outlawing the practice.

About a dozen high school students with a group called “Generation tXt” visited with lawmakers and held a news conference calling for a statewide ban on texting while driving. The group was joined by legislators, law enforcement and insurance industry officials.

The teen group was started four years ago by students at Tulsa’s Booker T. Washington High School and has grown to include students from four Tulsa-area high schools. Several bills to ban texting while driving have been introduced this legislative session.

Former House Speaker T.W. Shannon opposed a texting ban, but his successor Speaker Jeff Hickman has supported the idea.
