Texas Special Session to Consider Insurance Department Now Likely

After the Texas Legislature adjourned without reuthorizing the Texas Department of Insurance, Gov. Rick Perry stated he was considering other options to facilitate the continuing operation of TDI besides a special legislative session.

However, a special session will likely occur after all, the governor says, in order to take up legislation necessary to keep TDI operating. Without such a bill, the department is slated to close by Sept. 1, 2010, under Texas sunset laws.

Perry has not set a date for the session.

He did, however, break his right collar bone while mountain biking in Austin on June 9, the governor’s office said. The governor was treated at a local hospital and released.
