Suspended La. Commissioner Told to Report to Jail

A federal judge ordered suspended Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Brown to report to federal prison Oct. 15 to begin serving his six month sentence for allegedly lying to a federal agent. The judge made the order two years after Brown was convicted and sentenced in a case involving the state’s handling of a failed insurance company.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune Brown has been out of jail while his case was appealed, unsuccessfully, to the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. The 5th Circuit Court additionally refused Brown’s request to remain free while he appeals his case to the U.S. Supreme Court. Instead, the 5th Circuit Court remanded the case to the U.S. district court where it was originally tried for a prison assignment date.

Brown plans to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to let him stay out of prison pending his appeal to the high court.
