Markets/Coverages: FM Bumps Up Limits for Data Centers to $5B

January 13, 2026

Commercial property insurer FM announced a significant increase in capacity to support its global FM Intellium clients and the data and power generation ecosystem.

FM can now provide up to $5 billion in capacity for the growing data-center industry. FM said this is the largest limit serving data centers.

Johnston, Rhode Island-based FM launched FM Intellium last year to help businesses seize the opportunities and mitigate the risks of technological advancement, from artificial intelligence to cloud computing to the power generation needs these innovations require. Last October, Christopher Dempsey was appointed to lead the unit.

FM said it has insured data centers for more than 25 years. Today the company protects about 1,100 data centers, representing $250 billion of insurable value.

“Through our unique engineering- and research-led approach to protecting our clients—combined with our innovative solutions and substantial capacity—FM is again leading the way by supporting the data center industry as it grows,” Malcolm Roberts, chairman and chief executive officer of FM. “We believe demand for digital infrastructure will only increase as AI and cloud computing continue to grow, and insurers must keep pace to ensure this critical industry remains resilient and operational for the communities and businesses it serves.”
