AIG Makes Changes at Top of Global P/C Underwriting, Validus

June 6, 2019

American International Group announced leadership appointments in its Global Chief Underwriting Office, adding underwriters with expertise in global property and casualty underwriting. These appointments are effective immediately:

  • Kean Driscoll has been appointed global chief underwriting officer for Property and Agriculture, General Insurance.
  • Also, Alexander Baugh has been appointed global chief underwriting officer for Casualty and Financial Lines, General Insurance.

In these new global underwriting leadership roles, Driscoll and Baugh will work with General Insurance’s global underwriting organization and regional business teams to align underwriting with AIG’s overall risk appetite and engage with clients and distribution partners.

Driscoll and Baugh will report to Tom Bolt, global chief underwriting officer, AIG General Insurance, and will continue to serve on the General Insurance executive leadership team.

“These leadership appointments strengthen our focus on underwriting excellence,” said Peter Zaffino, president and CEO, AIG General Insurance, and Global Chief Operating Officer, AIG.

A founding member of Validus, most recently Driscoll served as CEO of Validus Re. He previously served as chief underwriting officer. He has more than 20 years’ experience as a reinsurance underwriter, and was previously with Quanta Re and Zurich Re N.A., which later became Converium.

AIG acquired Bermuda reinsurer and specialist insurer Validus Holdings last July in a $5.5 billion deal.

In connection with Driscoll’s new role, Jeff Clements has been appointed CEO of Validus Re, effective immediately. Clements previously served as chief underwriting officer of Validus Re.

Baugh has spent his 35-year career at AIG, and most recently served as president and CEO of North America operations of General Insurance since 2017. AIG announced yesterday that David McElroy, president and CEO of Lexington, has been promoted to president and CEO of the North America General Insurance.

Baugh is a 30-year AIG veteran, and was previously president of Liability and Financial Lines at AIG, where he has been overseeing the largest part of the global Commercial portfolio. Before that, he was president of Global Casualty at AIG, and chief risk officer/head of strategic planning for AIG Property Casualty, among other positions.
