Smith Named President of Ironshore Environmental, Replacing O’Brien

November 21, 2017

Ironshore Inc. announced that Toby Smith has been appointed president of Ironshore Environmental.

Smith assumes the role from John O’Brien, who recently left recently the company to pursue new opportunities.

Smith will lead the global environmental unit, reporting to Shaun E. Kelly, president and chief executive officer of Ironshore’s U.S. operations.

Smith was involved in the launch of Ironshore Environmental in 2009. During his tenure with the company, he has served in various management positions, including underwriting, marketing and distribution of the environmental unit’s products and services for clients across Ironshore’s global platforms.

O’Brien’s departure comes six months after Ironshore was acquired by Liberty Mutual and he was named to head the Environmental unit. Before joining Ironshore in 2009, O’Brien was president and chief operating officer of AIG Environmental and had been with AIG for 17 years.

O’Brien has only good things to say about his time and the people he worked with at Ironshore on his LinkedIn page, where he also hints he could be announcing a new venture soon. “I loved every min of every day, that being said it’s time to let the next generation of managers take the helm and make things happen,” he wrote. “Best of luck to All. I will be looking at different ventures in the coming weeks and hope to be starting something interesting soon.”

Additionally, Kevin Fee has been named chief operating officer for the Environmental group, reporting to Smith. Free has been part of the Environmental group at Ironshore since 2009. Most recently, he has been the regional executive for the Philadelphia region, while continuing his involvement in the Environmental unit.

Ironshore Environmental offers insurance to protect against the adverse financial impact of environmental incidents and liabilities for commercial industry risks.
