Internet Scam Targets Insurer USAA’s Customers

November 8, 2010

USAA, the banking and insurance company that caters to military personnel, says it is investigating an e-mail scam aimed at getting its customers’ personal information.

The scheme targets a wide number of people in hopes of finding some who are USAA customers, a spokesman for the San Antonio-based company said. Like other so-called phishing scams, it directs people to a bogus website portraying itself as USAA’s.

In a notice on its website, USAA says it never asks for personal or account information by e-mail. Suspicious e-mails can be forwarded to abuse@usaa.com.
