Severe Thunderstorms Threaten From Great Lakes to New Jersey

Another round of severe thunderstorms is threatening the US and Canada, from the Great Lakes to New Jersey, promising to disrupt flights and cause power outages.

There is a level two risk of severe thunderstorms from Michigan to New Jersey on Wednesday, the US Storm Prediction Center said, with the potential for southern New York to be hit in the evening. Yellow warnings have been posted in southwest Ontario by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“Damaging wind gusts are the main threat, though some large hail and a few tornadoes may also occur,” the US Storm Prediction Center said. Depending on how the weather systems develop, “a greater tornado risk may evolve in the evening across southern NY and central PA.”

More than 19,000 people are still without power in Pennsylvania after storms ripped through the region Tuesday, according to PowerOutage.com. Yesterday, dozens of trees and power lines were knocked down across the state and New Jersey, while hundreds of flights were canceled.

Temperatures are also set to soar across the region, raising power demand.

Last month, New York was shaken as a rare tornado touched down on Long Island’s Atlantic Beach. The Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and parts of New England have all seen waves of thunderstorms this summer that have grounded thousands of flights, driven residents from their homes and caused massive power outages.
