Mother of Kansas City Woman Killed in Firetruck Crash Sues

The mother of a woman who died when she was hit by a firetruck in Kansas City last month has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, the fire department and the fire truck’s driver.

Judy Holland, the mother of 41-year-old Tami Knight, alleges in the wrongful death lawsuit filed last week that the firetruck driver was negligent, The Kansas City Star reported.

Knight was killed on Dec. 15 when the fire pumper, which was responding to a call, hit another vehicle in the city’s Westport entertainment district.

The vehicles struck Knight, who was walking on a sidewalk, before crashing into a building, police said. No one was inside the building, which partially collapsed.

Jennifer San Nicolas, 41, and Michael Elwood, 25, who were in the vehicle hit by the truck, also died. All three victims were from Kansas City.

Holland’s lawsuit accuses the firetruck’s driver of running a red light, failing to yield to the right of way and traveling too fast for conditions. Elwood’s parents filed a similar lawsuit earlier this month.

The Kansas City fire department does not comment on pending litigation.
