Minnesota Issues Riot Claims Data Call to Property/Casualty Insurers

Minnesota’s insurance regulators issued a data call in late June, requesting information from property/casualty insurers in the state about claims filed in the wake of the riots/civil commotion following the killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2020.

The Minnesota Department of Commerce said it is conducting a disaster data gathering effort in order to provide much-needed information to the department, as well as information for local, state and federal officials responsible for making policy and public funding decisions for the relief, rebuilding and future risk mitigation effort over the next several months and years.

Certain property/ casualty insurers transacting property/ casualty business in Minnesota are directed to submit certain information for claims resulting from the riots/civil commotion following Mr. Floyd’s death and the expected financial impact associated with the resulting civil unrest.

Information regarding the riots/civil commotion should be submitted on the provided Excel template to: insurance.bulletin@state.mn.us. (Requests for electronic copy of the spreadsheet can also be directed to this email address).

Information or data submitted is confidential and shall be disclosed to other state insurance regulators or state and federal regulatory bodies only if necessary to further the requesting entity’s regulatory authority, and only if the entity to whom disclosure is made has the legal authority necessary to protect from disclosure and to otherwise preserve the confidential or privileged nature of the confidential information it receives.
