Wisconsin Jury Awards $15M to Family of Bicyclist Killed by Driver

June 10, 2019

A jury in Dane County has award more than $15 million to the family of a woman struck and killed while riding her bike in Madison.

The jury awarded $10 million for loss of society and companionship in Emilly Zhu’s death and $5 million for pain and suffering. The family’s attorney, Clayton Griessmeyer, says the $10 million award will be automatically reduced to $350,000, which is the cap in Wisconsin. But, there is no cap for pain and suffering.

The State Journal says the jury award Thursday comes nearly four years after the 23-year-old woman was struck as she rode her bike to work at Epic Systems. The driver, Brian Hodgson, was not charged in the crash. The jury found Hodgson was 100 percent at fault for her death.
