Marmarth, N.D., Dike Decertified by Feds

Federal officials have decertified a dike that for half a century has protected the southwest North Dakota town of Marmarth from flooding by the Little Missouri River.

That means Marmarth will be mapped as a flood plain, and lenders might require flood insurance for loans to build or improve property in town.

According to the Bismarck Tribune, Marmarth Mayor Patti Perry says federal funding for projects might become more of a problem, but she doesn’t plan to get flood insurance herself. She says just because the dam is decertified doesn’t mean it won’t continue to hold back water.
