Report: Univ. of Wisconsin Camps Should Carry Accident Insurance

Auditors are making several recommendations to limit legal liability and improve the safety of children who attend sports, music and other camps on University of Wisconsin campuses.

An audit report to be presented to the UW System Board of Regents recommends campuses conduct background checks on camp volunteers and require each camp to carry accident insurance.

The report recommends campuses improve oversight by assigning a specific office to approve plans and set policies.

The report says the number of insurance claims filed by campers has been relatively small, but “injury at camps and clinics is a persistent risk.” It acknowledges requiring insurance could slightly increase the cost of attending the more than 750 events and programs that fall within the definition.
