Indiana Town Targeting Landlords Without Liability Coverage
East Chicago, Ind., is getting tough with city landlords.
A new ordinance requires landlords to carry liability insurance and register properties with the city. It also will create a database of rental properties so building and code enforcement officials can make regular safety inspections.
Each rental unit will be subject to a $10 annual fee to help pay for the inspectors’ expanded duties and demolition of abandoned buildings.
Owner-occupied residences are exempt from the new requirements.
Failure to comply with the regulations can result in fines.
The city has an estimated 6,000 rental units.
