Antioch University in Ohio Sued over Alleged Rape on Overseas Program
A former university student says in a lawsuit she was raped by a bus driver hired as part of Antioch University’s overseas study program.
The student alleges in a lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court that she was raped while on a three-month trip to the West African nation of Mali.
The student attended Eastern Michigan University but traveled to Mali through Antioch’s Education Abroad program.
The lawsuit, seeking more than $75,000 in damages, claims the bus driver raped the student after inviting her to his room for a cup of tea.
The lawsuit says female students weren’t warned that they should never spend time alone with men in Mali.
Antioch spokeswoman Lynda Sirk says the university is aware of the lawsuit but has no comment.
