Cedar Rapids Exempt Employees Get Extra Pay for Flood Duty

October 16, 2008

One hundred and fifty Cedar Rapids employees are getting extra pay for their work during this summer’s flooding.

The payments for the employees who don’t qualify for overtime were approved in August. The total amount paid to the exempt employees was nearly $327,000.

The largest check, about $13,600, went to Police Chief Greg Graham. The second largest, about $9,500, went to Mark Jones, the manager of the solid waste and recycling operation.

Employees in the city utilities operation, community development, information technology, fire department, public works, finance department, parks and recreation and the library received the extra pay.

City Manager Jim Prosser says exempt employees understand they can be required to work more than 40 hours a week without extra pay, but he says the flooding was an “extraordinary” situation.
