Chubb Promotes Ortega to President, Overseas, as Andrade Moves to Top Everest Role

Chubb Ltd. has appointed Juan Luis Ortega as executive vice president, Chubb Group, and president, Overseas General Insurance. He succeeds Juan Andrade, who is leaving Chubb to take the role of president and chief executive officer of Everest Re.

Everest said Andrade ultimately will succeed Dominic J. Addesso as president and CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2020, but will take on an interim position of chief operating officer, effective Sept. 1, 2019, until he moves into the CEO position next year.

Ortega immediately moves into his new role from his previous position as senior vice president of Chubb Group and regional president of Latin America. He reports to John Keogh, executive vice chairman and chief operating officer of Chubb. Ortega will have operating responsibility for Chubb’s general insurance business in 51 countries outside of North America, including commercial P&C, traditional and specialty personal lines, and accident and health insurance.

Ortega is succeeded as senior vice president of Chubb Group, and regional president, Latin America, by Marcos Gunn. Gunn is currently division president, Northern Latin America, which includes Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, and Chief Operating Officer of the Latin America region. Reporting to Ortega, Gunn will retain his current responsibilities for an interim period and his successor will be announced shortly.

With 20 years of insurance industry experience, Ortega was named regional president of Latin America in 2016 and served as regional president of Asia Pacific from 2013 -2016, a position he retained after ACE’s acquisition of Chubb. Previously, Ortega served as senior vice president, A&H, for the company’s Asia Pacific region. He joined ACE in 1999 and advanced through a series of accident and health and credit insurance management positions in Miami, Puerto Rico and Mexico, before being named country president of Chile in 2005, where he was responsible for ACE’s P&C, A&H and life insurance businesses in that country. Ortega has also served as senior vice president and regional head of Accident & Health for the company’s Latin America region.

Ortega earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and Business Administration from Universidad Diego Portales, Chile.

Before his move to Everest, Andrade spent more than 25 years in the insurance industry, successfully leading large and complex domestic and international businesses. He has served in executive leadership roles in underwriting, product development and innovation, claims, sales and distribution, strategy development, and general management where he was responsible for leading all aspects of his businesses.

He most recently held the position of executive vice president of Chubb Group and president, Overseas General Insurance. At Chubb, Andrade was responsible for Chubb’s general insurance business in over 50 countries outside of North America, including commercial P&C, traditional and specialty personal lines, and accident and health insurance. Prior to ACE’s acquisition of Chubb in January 2016, he was an executive vice president, of ACE and the COO for ACE Overseas General with responsibilities in both the United States and international.

Andrade has extensive experience in the United States and across Europe, Asia Pacific, Japan, Latin America and Africa, as well as the London wholesale market and Lloyd’s. Before commencing his insurance career, Andrade worked in national security and international affairs within the U.S. Federal Government’s Executive Branch and The Executive Office of the President.

Gunn has more than 20 years of insurance industry experience. When ACE completed its acquisition of Chubb in 2016, he was appointed president, Northern Latin America Region, in addition to his role as chief operating officer for the company’s Latin America operations. Gunn joined ACE in 2000, and has served in a variety of management roles of increasing responsibility, including country president of Chile; regional vice president of Accident and Health, Latin America; and regional vice president of Accident & Health, Asia Pacific. Prior to joining ACE, he served as a commercial insurance underwriter at Chubb in Argentina, as well as underwriting and management positions at other insurance companies. Gunn holds a degree in business administration from the Catholic University of Buenos Aires.
