Typhoon Trami is bringing Tokyo to a halt.

East Japan Railway Co. suspended all train service in the Japanese capital on Sunday in preparation for the storm, which is hammering the southwest of the country.

Flights were canceled at major airports, including Tokyo’s Narita and Haneda. Kansai International Airport closed two runways on Sunday to prepare for the possible impact of Trami.

The typhoon will approach central Japan later Sunday night, and is expected to pick up speed when it passes through the eastern and northern areas of the country on Monday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

More than 275,000 homes and offices had power outages as of noon on Sunday in the southern Kyushu region, while about 175,000 buildings were without power in Okinawa.

The system swept the southern islands of Okinawa and Kyushu Sunday morning, with winds gusts of up to 222 kilometers per hour (138 mph). The tropical cyclone is classified as a “very strong” typhoon, the second-highest on the JMA scale.

About 50 people were injured on Okinawa and the prefecture of Kagoshima in Kyushu, according to NHK. The bullet train service between Kumamoto and central Kagoshima was also halted, according to the Kyushu Railway Co.
