Chilton to Return to Capsicum Re Later This Year After Leaving Gallagher Role

June 21, 2018

Capsicum Re, the London-based specialist reinsurance broker, announced that Grahame “Chily” Chilton will rejoin the business later this year.

Chilton will work alongside CEO Rupert Swallow to drive global business development and help shape the strategic direction of the company as it enters its next phase of growth, said Capsicum Re in a statement.

This announcement comes on the heels of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.’s message on June 18 that Chilton, who is CEO of Gallagher’s UK-based brokerage and underwriting division, would be stepping down from the role later this year, a position he has held since February 2015.

Well known in the re/insurance market for founding and developing the Benfield Group, Chilton is the former chairman of Aon Benfield. Aon plc bought Benfield Group in 2008 and Chilton left Aon Benfield in 2012. In 2013, Chilton and Swallow founded Capsicum Reinsurance Brokers to work in partnership with Arthur J. Gallagher as its primary treaty reinsurance broking outlet. The broker, which has offices in London, Miami, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago and Bermuda, is getting ready to celebrate its five-year anniversary.

“Capsicum Re has built a robust business, that has grown exponentially and we are on our way to becoming a top five global reinsurance broker,” said Swallow. “The whole Capsicum Re team is looking forward to welcoming Chily back and benefiting from his expertise and experience as both a sales leader and the relationship manager of our joint venture with Gallagher.”

“Rupert and the whole Capsicum Re team have done a stellar job taking the business forward to become one of the market’s leading reinsurance brokers in just five years,” said Chilton. “I have had a fantastic and truly rewarding time in my current role with Gallagher and look forward to re-joining Capsicum Re later this year and working with the team there to maximize the business’ further growth potential, which is significant.”
