Indonesia To Require Piracy Insurance

The Indonesian National Shipowners Ass’n. announced that foreign vessels sailing in the country’s waters will now be required to insure their cargoes against piracy.

The move comes in response to the sharp increase in incidents of piracy in and around Indonesia. According to the International Maritime Bureau there were 23 attacks on vessels in the first three months of this year. Over the last five years the country’s sea lanes have registered the highest number of attacks in the world.
