Sampo-Leonia Board Approves Name Change, Share Split
The Board of Directors of Finland’s largest insurer, Sampo-Leonia plc, at its annual meeting yesterday, approved proposals to change the company’s name to “Sampo plc,” effective April 9th, and to split the shares on a 5 to 1 basis.
Unlike many corporate name changes, this one has real meaning. In the rich and varied mythology of the Finno-Ugric people the “Sampo” holds a central place. A mysterious Talisman, originally made by Ilmarinen the smith, it was sought after by gods and heroes. According to the legends, It was said to bring wealth, luck and general good fortune to its possessor. Apparently Sampo’s Board members are hoping the magic still works.
