AIG Sues Over London Train Crash
Last October a commuter train, operated by Thames Trains, collided with an incoming express train just after leaving London’s Paddington Station, killing 31 people and injuring many more.
While the government commission of inquiry is not scheduled to present its report the results of its investigation into the causes of the crash until May 10, AIG, the insurer of the infrastructure provider Railtrack, has filed suit to recover costs under the policy from Thames Trains.
The move was seen as largely procedural in the absence of conclusive findings, and Thames Trains filed a counterclaim, but preliminary investigations indicate that the commuter train’s failure to observe a red signal was the proximate cause of the crash.
