Man Accused of Tampering with Pizza Dough Held Without Bail

A man accused of putting razor blades in pizza dough sold at a supermarket in Saco, Maine, has been ordered held without bail.

Nicholas Mitchell, 38, made his first court appearance on Friday after his extradition from New Hampshire, where he was arrested.

Mitchell is charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and violating previous bail conditions, which prohibited him from engaging in new criminal conduct or possessing dangerous weapons.

The defense argued Friday that the $20,000 bail on the new charges was too high, but he’s still being held for violating bail conditions. His next court appearance is in November.

Two Hannaford customers returned bags of fresh Portland Pie Co. dough purchased Oct. 5 because they contained razor blades and sharp metal fragments, Saco police said. Mitchell is a former employee of the company that supplied the pizza dough to Hannaford.

Police in three communities in Maine and New Hampshire are now investigating incidents. So far there have been no injuries, and the pizza dough has been recalled.
